2008 Winners
CNET Networks UK and our Awards sponsor, Lewis PR, would like to congratulate the 2008 winners:

Server or Storage Product of the Year
Parallels - Parallels Virtuozzo Containers 4.0
They said: “Parallels Virtuozzo Containers virtualises servers on the operating level, enabling users to recreate and use the underlying hardware resources in multiple virtual environments.”
The judges said: “Parallels stood out for continually innovating with virtualisation, especially with performance, manageability and usability. They have shown that the market hasn't been ceded to the big guns just yet.”

Business Application of the Year
Nasstar plc - Nasstar Hosted Desktop
They said: “Nasstar hosted desktop enables computing over the internet, empowering the business by allowing access to a hosted desktop rather than a local ‘on-premise’ system.”
The judges said: “Everyone talks about the potential of remotely managed virtual desktops to deliver enterprise-quality support to small companies. Nasstar is doing it.”

Networking Product of the Year
Ruckus Wireless, Inc - ZoneFlex 802.11n Smart Wireless LAN System
They said: “The Ruckus ZoneFlex 802.11n Smart Wireless LAN System is the first centrally-managed Wi-Fi system to integrate intelligent beam-forming and beam-steering technology with advanced wireless meshing.”
The judges said: “Anyone can plug in a wireless router. Not everyone can manage hundreds, let alone combine the latest technology into a way that truly delivers on its promises. Ruckus Wireless’ holistic approach blends advanced technology into a complete solution.”

Security Product or Service of the Year
ScanSafe - Anywhere+
They said: “Anywhere+ is the world’s first SaaS security for roaming workers. This solution makes it possible to protect roaming employees wherever they are working.”
The judges said: “With security within the enterprise still causing headaches, extending protection to the mobile workforce is often an agony too far. Delivering security as a service through mobile connectivity, ScanSafe has an answer that is a very good fit to the way people actually work.”

Communications Product or Service of the Year
BT - Web 21C SDK
They said: “The BT Web 21C SDK is a set of libraries that allows service developers to consume BT Web Services to create applications that include traditional telecom functionality more simply than ever before. “
The judges said: “The idea of convergence has been much abused by marketing people from both sides of the communication and computing divide. By understanding the importance of developers and actively supporting them, the BT has made an important step into that converged future.”

Mobile Product or Service of the Year
BigHand - BigHand Mobile (BlackBerry Edition)
They said: “BigHand Mobile (BlackBerry Edition) enables mobile users to send instruction instantly into the office workflow, enhancing document turnaround times, remote productivity and client service.”
The judges said: “Phones are better for talking into than typing on, a fact no amount of usability sugar can sweeten. BigHand recognised this and has made working life easier for mobile users thereby enhancing productivity and client service.”

Technology Innovation of the Year
Ruckus Wireless, Inc - Ruckus SmartMesh (TM) Technology
They said: “Smartmesh is the first indoor wireless LAN meshing technology that combines intelligent beam-forming/beam-steering with 802.11n and advanced RF routing.”
The judges said: “Too much new technology is hobbled by being used in old ways. By developing mesh networking that makes good use of one of wireless's unique aspects, Ruckus Wireless has shown the practicality of a brand-new way of thinking.”

Public Sector Technology Project of the Year
Pharmaceutical Oncology Initiative Partnership (POIP) - C-PORT (Chemotherapy Planning Oncology Resource Tool)
They said: “The C-PORT is a web-based capacity planning tool for the UK cancer units. Launched in November 2006, but re-developed and substantially improved in the UK in 2007.”
The judges said: “This entry stood out by demonstrating a high degree of collaboration between a large number of stakeholders. It crosses the boundaries between public and private sectors in a way few IT programmes have ever managed to do before. It’s impact goes deep into the communities the project is designed to support and we were impressed by its potential to improve the quality of ordinary people’s lives.”

Financial Services Technology Project of the Year
RBS - SPOT - Shared Product Opportunity Tool
They said: “With SPOT, RBS overhauled its client management to drive profitability and success through the development of a collaboration network.”
The judges said: “RBS implemented a new system to integrate client information previously held on disparate corporate and investment banking systems. We were impressed by the implementation’s ability to increase sales opportunities exponentially.”

Retail & Leisure Sector Technology Project of the Year
Fiat - Fiat online sales channel
They said: “Fiat successfully re-launched www.fiat.co.uk, bringing together cutting edge creativity and usability to the sales process and brand, along with a practical operational platform.”
The judges said: “Fiat’s website incorporated 3D models, video and interactivity to present their product range and financing options. This site upgrade was thought to be exemplary in its attempts to harness the power of web 2.0 applications and demonstrated the result with an exponential increase in sales leads.”

Green IT Initiative of the Year
BT Operate - 21CN Data Centre Project
They said: “21st Century data centre initiative aims to drastically reduce carbon emissions through innovation in cooling, power consumption and virtualisation.”
The judges said: “BT stood out for having delivered a massive project which promises to cut their carbon footprint by 80 per cent and slash its electricity bill.”

They said: “The campaign highlighted the potential problems associated with allowing employees uncontrolled access to applications and websites, and demonstrated the solutions available to control this behaviour.”
The judges said: “This campaign impressed us with its success in educating users about the potential perils of online which can lie in wait for fans of social networking. The agency developed an interesting angle on the story which resulted in high profile coverage for the client.”

Technology Marketing Campaign of the Year
Mason Zimbler - Toshiba - Bringing innovation to life
They said: “A lively, animated online Toshiba World, launching their new range of notebooks with two innovative feature sets, to business and consumer audiences across EMEA.”
The judges said: “This campaign was chosen for its energy and sales focus which entertained and also uncovered the benefits of the product.”

They said: “GEARS is a team within Credit Suisse skilled in business and technology, responsible for delivering a fully functioning cross-product and cross-entity risk management system in six months.”
The judges said: “The Credit Suisse team successfully delivered a fully functioning cross-product and cross-entity risk management system in just 6 months. Having persuaded others their approach was the best, the project brought significant benefits to the business.”

CIO of the Year
David Lister, Royal Bank of Scotland
The judges said: “David was recognised for having driven a giant business transformation programme for four years at Reuters which put in place a global tech platform and cutt IT costs. He is now tackling a new role at RBS where he is tasked with consolidating, streamlining and cutting the cost of back-office IT services.”

IT Community Hero of the Year
Mark Shuttleworth, Ubuntu Foundation
The judges said: “Mark Shuttleworth has given great support to the community of developers working on the Ubuntu project, as well as being an active member himself. The project is dedicated to building and maintaining a freely available operating system that can be used by anybody, anywhere in the world. The desktop and server versions have grown in popularity, including within enterprises, and as a side-effect, the project has also spun off tools for developers, such as Launchpad, and has worked on desktop OSes tailored to particular needs, such as Edubuntu.”
